Year 4 - Session 6 - Week 3
Procrastination was the kick-off launch this week. Heroes became equipped by naming 3 things that happen in our brain when faced with an important task :
Our Rational Decision Maker
The Instant-Gratification Monkey
The Panic Monster
Each of them headed back to their squads and drew their own interpretation of what these may look like in their head. You can check the YouTube video out here → Procrastination Video
Quest was all about pollinators this week! They dove into the role and purpose of supporting a “pollinator-rich environment.” They made bee-cups, explored seed dispersal through an interactive experiment, and played a Rumination Game. Mrs. Heather & Mr. Seth Guidry visited our heroes and shared some interesting knowledge about general ecosystem health, soil quality related to cattle nutrition, symbiosis between species (specifically grazing on the same pasture) and overall gut health in ruminants. A big THANK YOU to these two world-changers!
The pitch a pet pre-writing stage came to an end this week with heroes listing benefits and possible objections that others may have. They completed their first rough draft, and are thrilled about the possibility of actually getting a studio pet.
Town Hall had several of our heroes frustrated with the lack of accountability. We decided that when someone left something out after a transition, that item would be taken for 7 days. This could be water bottles, shoes, chromebooks, snacktime, books, binders, sweaters, or quest time. Each hero will be responsible for tidying their area and returning things to their home. They also voted to get the bench back outside during lunch time with Sawyer proposing a “draw a name” system. Finally, Lydia proposed that Life of Fred math stories be reimplemented for those interested in collaborating. The studio voted “YES!”
For Game Time Friday this week, heroes had to complete both Communication Challenges, Quest Challenge #1, not excused more than 2xs and gain 5% in Khan! They worked incredibly hard in Khan throughout the week with some heroes taking their chromebooks home to complete the requirement. We’d call that perseverence!
The heroes can’t stop talking about the bus ride coming up on Friday 5/19. Please be sure to turn in your permission slip and chaperone info!
Ways to Help your hero at home be successful in the studio:
Give them responsibilities with a natural consequence. Then HOLD THE LINE- BE CONSISTENT.
Do NOT clean up their personal items. Set the expectation that they are unable to ________ (something they enjoy), until all of their items are placed in their homes.
Ask what character traits have been hardest to live up to in the studio.
Check in once a week on their session goals process
Next week: what would you like to start, stop and continue?
