Year 5 - Session 1 - Week 5

💌A Letter from a Hero💌

This is a story about all of the things I learned throughout Session 1 Year 5 - Build the Tribe.

The past two years, I used to just want to be in charge of everything. When people would not listen, I would get really annoyed, and I did not know why they were not listening. So I figured that I should probably start talking to them and asking them why they were mad or not listening. And throughout all of that, I started to pay more attention to the guides and how they handled things. After trying that, I figured out that talking to them and letting them share their feelings with me works a lot better than yelling. And so I started my 3rd year at Acton and I chose to try to talk to people and ask them about their feelings. I quickly found that some people just like to be alone, and so I tell them that I can give them a few minutes. Then I go back to talk to them. And something else that I figured out is that when I lead a conflict resolution I should get each hero's side first. I then give them the same amount of time to talk  and share their side. I also have started to make sure that there was a resolution before we ended the conflict resolution because if we do not then it might happen again. And something big that I learned that will stick with me for the rest of my life is that when you are in a group, always try to get to know the people that you work with/go to school with so you can know what brings them joy. Then you can give them the role that would bring them joy and then it will help them to work.

One of the times that I used this method was when I was the group leader for the lip dub. I had to lead my team in their practices. And when we were deciding which singing part each person would get, I made sure to ask them what they would feel comfortable doing and I gave them that job. I also realized that sometimes if someone is not working, you just have to let it go unless they are harming the studio or eachother. I also learned how important it was to get my work done, and I have started to work more efficiently and take my stuff home to get more badges. I would also get compliments a lot about how much of a sheepdog I am, and I would be so thankful when people would say that to me.But I never really paid that much attention to it, and when I started to pay more attention to it I got feedback from it. That helped me so much! When someone is mad at me or unhappy with me, I always ask them what I did and what they would like to see me do differently next time. And that has always helped me. I know it has only been one session but I have learned so much.My goal for next session is to focus on myself. And one big thank you to Acton Academy Lake Charles and all of my friends. Because they helped me to unleash the sheepdog side of me, and they have always been there to support me and give me feedback.Thank you!
